Tenkara-Streamlined Fly Fishing!

Fly fishing simplified. Tenkara fly fishing is a growing trend in fly fishing and RIGS offers you the opportunity to learn from our Certified Tenkara Network Guides! With its simplified approach (no reel, just rod and line), long rods, and ultra-accurate presentation, even first timers can catch fish on the fly. It is an incredibly intuitive approach that puts you in direct contact with fly and stream.

Our ½ day back-country trip will take you off the beaten path to a nearby stream that’s loaded with pocket water, small pools, and short runs, holding brook trout, rainbows, and native cutthroat trout. Tenkara is the best method for these streams.  Enjoy incredible scenery on water where you probably won’t see another angler all day.  Trip includes transportation from our shop to and from the destination, a Tenkara rod, line, and flies, and of course, guiding and instruction.

*Some of the main advantages are its simplicity, the very delicate presentations with the light line, the ability to hold the line off the water and a fly in place over difficult currents, precise casting, and great control of the fly. Only rod, line and fly are used. The line is attached directly to the tip of the rod, tippet is attached to the end of the Tenkara line. Like in western fly-fishing, the line propels the weightless fly to the desired target and there is a fly-casting technique involved - just a bit slower, and with a shorter casting stroke. Landing a fish is very intuitive and similar to any type of fishing with a rod: one simply raises the rod high, and reaches for the fish. Tenkara is an ancient Japanese angling method, relatively new to the US. While its own style of fly fishing, it is a great tool for the techniques of close-up nymphing, soft-hackle wet fly-fishing and virtually drag-free dry fly fishing. It's also a great way to get kids engaged in the tradition of fly-fishing, to catch your own food while backpacking, or to simply enjoy the fishing experience. Prices are per person.

*PLEASE NOTE: In order to legally fish in the State of Colorado, anyone 16 years or older must possess a valid Colorado State Fishing License. Fishing licenses can be purchased at our Full Service Fly Shop, or you can conveniently purchase them online through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website. Cost of license is not included in trip prices. Licenses can be purchased for periods of one day or more.

Our Deluxe Format provides a more intimate experience with smaller client group sizes, additional amenities and services, and a Dedicated Gear Boat which allows for lighter rafts and, in turn, you get to spend more time exploring the pools and runs of the Gunnison River Gorge. Our gear boat goes on ahead to set up camp and prepare for our arrival!  Both you and your guide can now focus on fishing, as there is no rush to set up camp. Why not chase big fish all day?

Join us for the ideal way to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Gorge- from the inside! A true wilderness experience, this 14 mile river section combines wildlife and scenery with class II-III+ whitewater through one of the most spectacular river canyons in North America.  We drive from the RIGS fly shop in Ridgway to the trailhead at the canyon rim.  From there, we hike the 1.1 mile trail down to the river.  After gearing up and reviewing trip considerations, we start floating and fishing the pools and runs of the Gunnison Gorge.

The "Gold Medal Waters" of the Gunnison Gorge are famous for world class Rainbow and Brown trout fishing.  This fishery commands serious respect as the CDOW conducts population census on a annual basis.  There are 8,700 catchable fish per mile and more than 200 fish per mile that are over 18". Add 425 lbs per sample acre and you have something really special.  World renowned for the "Stone Fly Hatch", the "Gunny" also plays host to many other fine insect hatches making for a true bug factory.  While the Gunnison River sees moderate use, the Gorge, because of it's remote location and challenging access, receives the least angling pressure of all the floatable sections.

This unique desert environment also plays host to a diverse array of wildlife including Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer, Elk, a wide variety of birds of prey including Golden Eagles and Osprey, and although seldom seen, many predators inhabit the canyon as well.  If you can take your eye off the fly for a moment, you'll witness breath taking geology as some of the oldest rock in North America is exposed, making for stunning scenery.  Don't forget your camera as you join us for a unforgettable experience.

*PLEASE NOTE: In order to legally fish in the State of Colorado, anyone 16 years or older must possess a valid Colorado State Fishing License. Welcome to The Palometa Club, an exclusive fly fishing lodge located in Punta Allen, Mexico on the northeastern edge of the famed shallow saltwater flats of Ascension Bay.  In only six seasons, the Palometa Club has built a reputation as the perhaps the most respected fishing lodge in the Caribbean.  While we have become recognized as the planet’s premier permit fishing program, the flats of Ascension Bay offer anglers consistent opportunities for bonefish, tarpon, snook, barracuda, jack crevalle, and more.  We hang our hats on our 1:1 guide to angler ratio, our unique techniques and approach, and our all-star staff of local, professional guides.  The Palometa Club is anything but a “fishing motel”, rather a boutique, old school fishing lodge in the purist form. We focus on the aspects of what make a good fishing trip and excellent fishing trip. A destination you will migrate back to year after year.

“If you want to catch a permit on the fly, there is no question that you stand a better chance here than any place I know.” – Lefty Kreh

High Alpine Trout Fishing

High alpine fishing at its best! With their headwaters protected in the Big Blue Wilderness, the three different forks of the Cimarron River offer endless fishing for rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Solitude, native fish, and remote access bring classic fly fishing to life in one of the prettiest settings in all of Colorado. With over 10 miles of access on three separate small creeks, and a wonderful three mile section of remote tail-waters below Silver jack Reservoir, the Cimarron River area is a top pick guide favorite!

"You'll be amazed by the diversity of landscape, from alpine tundra to majestic spires, pinnacles and castles blocking the sun to dark, green forests carpeting steep mountains. And water, water everywhere."

Crystal Clear Freestone River

Winding through the majestic San Juan Mountains in the shadows of 14,000 foot Mount Wilson, the San Miguel River is one of Colorado's most spectacular and least known fly fishing destinations. Gin clear water, coupled with prolific insect hatches, provide even beginner anglers a rare opportunity to experience classic Colorado dry fly fishing, to eager rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. As the San Miguel meanders its way through red-rock walls, scenic sandstone canyons, and forested banks, expect to be amazed at the river's serene riparian ecology. The San Miguel River, with its near endless public access, beckons anglers to experience one of Colorado's last freestone (undammed) trout streams. Stoneflies, Caddis, Pale Morning Dun, Blue Winged Olives, Midges and Terrestrials are just some of the incredible insect hatches anglers can experience throughout the year. The San Miguel's most productive sections are located 30 minutes from Ridgway, 45 minutes from Ouray and just 30 minutes from Telluride. *Lunch is included on all Full Day trips.

Tenkara-Streamlined Fly Fishing!

Fly fishing simplified! Tenkara fly fishing is a growing trend in fly fishing and RIGS has some of the top Certified Tenkara Network Guides in Colorado! With its simplified approach (no reel, just rod, line, and fly), long rods, and ultra-accurate presentation, even first timers can catch fish on the fly. It is an incredibly intuitive approach that puts you in direct contact with fly and stream. Join one of our certified Tenkara Guides for quality, hands-on instruction.

A full day of backcountry fly fishing will allow you to explore even deeper into our canyons, rivers, and streams.  Miles and miles of streams filled with brook trout, rainbows, browns, and native cutthroats are waiting.  These are wild, remote places where you usually will have the stream to yourself for the day.  Try Tenkara for the most productive method on these waters.  Our full day backcountry trips include transportation from the fly shop to and from the water, a Tenkara rod, line, and flies, riverside lunch, and a full day of guiding and instruction.

*Some of the main advantages of Tenkara are its simplicity, the very delicate presentations with the light line, the ability to hold the line off the water and a fly in place over difficult currents, precise casting, and great control of the fly. Only rod, line, and fly are used. The line is attached directly to the tip of the rod, tippet is attached to the end of the Tenkara line. Like in western fly fishing, the line propels the weightless fly to the desired target and there is a fly-casting technique involved - just a bit slower, and with a shorter casting stroke.
