Deep within the boundaries of Canyonlands National Park, Cataract Canyon is a perfect balance between serene floating, incredible hiking, and fast-moving rapids. The canyon is filled with 300 million years of rock history, abstract sculpted sandstone spires, and Ancient petroglyphs and granaries.
During high water (May through June), the rapids provide the biggest and most challenging whitewater in the U.S. In July, the river drops and the rapids become more moderate, yet still exciting. The adventure continues returning to Moab by scenic air flight (suggested option) offering a bird's eye view of Canyonlands National Park.
Westwater Canyon was featured in National Geographic's "Wild and Scenic Rivers" book. This scenic voyage has all the components of a classic river trip: great whitewater, wonderful camp sites, spectacular and drastic geology, variety of wildlife, and remote wilderness canyons.
This particular stretch of the Colorado River is wild and free flowing, resulting in a variety of water levels through the rafting season. The narrow canyon of 1.7 billion-year-old black schist rock is a sharp contrast to the red rock cliffs preceding and following the whitewater section. Indian pictographs and other relics of human and natural history are some of the hiking highlights.
If you're looking for quality time for the whole family, something where everybody has fun on the same vacation, the Majestic Canyons is your trip! This journey offers exciting whitewater for kids of all ages, charming camp sites on sandy beaches, ancient Native American and cowboy history, and astounding geological formations. There are over 50 playful rapids in Desolation Canyon that are full of big rolling waves. Each day time is set aside for families to interact together including campfire games, paddling together in an inflatable kayak or leisure walks up a secluded side canyon.
This registered and historical landmark is a hidden jewel of the American West. Travel through Desolation and Gray Canyons, explored by John Wesley Powell during his historic 1869 expedition. Experience the famous outlaw hideouts, early frontier homesteads, and Freemont Indian sites.
These majestic canyons rival the Grand Canyon for its depth and inspirational beauty. There are over 50 exciting rapids with big rolling waves that build each day. Incredible scenery, abundant wildlife, camping, hiking, swimming, sandy beaches, relaxing, and the fun of whitewater rafting creates the ultimate vacation.
The 5 day Women's Writing and Sculpting Journey through Westwater Canyon offers an adventurous sojourn into nature. This one of a kind vacation is hosted by acclaimed author Page Lambert. Recipient of a 2004 Literary Fellowship from the Wyoming Arts Council, Page Lambert was described in "Inside/Outside Southwest Magazine" as one of the most notable women writers of the contemporary West.
Come play with the river clay and explore your hidden muse on Page Lambert's exclusive 5-day Westwater Canyon river writing and sculpting journey. Renowned artists Roxanne Swentzell and Rose B. Simpson of the Santa Clara Pueblo will be Page's featured guests.
This special trip will explore writing and sculpting as complementary forms of creative expression. Whether journaling or writing professionally, an established artist or just beginning, the natural world unleashes powerful creative energy. Personal writing and sculpting time is woven into the moments between floating down the Colorado River, hiking at your leisure, or relaxing on shore. Beginning with breakfast, seminar material (covering fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir and poetry) is presented at the river's edge and continues throughout the day, ending with readings under the stars.
The Gates of Lodore, located in Dinosaur National Monument, has all the elements of a classic river trip: great hikes, exciting whitewater, beautiful beaches and colorful history. The river is narrow, fast paced and there are rapids throughout the day. The scenery is a combination of Rocky Mountain forest drifting down into the rugged beauty of the dessert. Wildlife includes deer, bighorn sheep, eagles, hawks, river otters, and trout around every bend.
We purposely travel slowly, about 10-15 miles a day. There is ample time to explore the canyons, fish and take in the surrounding nature and its wildlife.
The Yampa River is the last free-flowing river in the entire Colorado River drainage and was featured in National Geographic's "Wild and Scenic Rivers" book. In the spring, the melting snow from the Rocky Mountains swells the narrow gorge creating unbridled rapids. The Yampa River is a guide favorite and is entirely within Dinosaur National Monument.
You'll float by desert big horn sheep as they drink at the river's edge. Eagles and hawks soar overhead coasting on the thermals. The scenery is dramatic and quite varied as 2000 feet of white sandstone walls grow quickly around you. There's time to explore some of the side canyons and see ancient Native American artwork.

The "Moab Daily" is a beautiful one day float trip on the Colorado River. The day trips begin upstream of Moab Utah and float through spectacular rock valleys next to Arches National Park. This is a great trip for those that want to see some of the magnificent canyons carve out by The Colorado River. On this 14-mile run, guests will experience fun rapids (class I and II) that are enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
What you'll see: This is typical "Old West" canyon country. Many movies were filmed here, including the classics"Wagonmaster" and John Wayne's "Rio Grande" and "Commancheros." You'll also recognize this area from"Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", "City Slickers II" and "Thelma and Louise." This section has many prominent sandstone spires that rise far above the ground. The "Titan," at over 900 feet tall, is the tallest Fisher Tower and was dubbed "Utah's skyscraper rock" by National Geographic.
What you'll do: This part of the Colorado River is slow, wide and warm, making swimming extremely fun on sunny summer days. This trip has class I-II rapids suitable for everyone 5 years and older with relaxing oarboats, fun paddleboats and playful inflatable kayaks. This is a great relaxing trip in a beautiful area of the world.
What's for Lunch: At lunch we will stop on a sandy beach to have a wonderful sandwich buffet lunch. Sheri Griffith Expeditions meals are by far the best on the river. We provide a variety of local meats, cheese and organic vegetables. Many of the vegetables are grown in our own personal garden or purchased from the locals farmers market. Our meats come from a local butcher shop. Next to our guides, the meals are what we get the most complements about.
The Dolores River begins in the deeply forested Rocky Mountains and flows down into steep canyons of flame-red rock. The Dolores is a classic western river: unspoiled with a majestic desert backdrop. The contrast of colors in Dolores Canyon is stunning: the deep green of the Ponderosa Pines growing beneath sheer sandstone cliffs of burnt orange hue. Pinion pine, juniper and Douglas Fir also populate the canyon. Water levels are dependent on the releases from the McPhee reservoir dam, and are usually only run-able until early June during a normal water year. The whitewater in the beginning of this section is mild-mannered with mellow Class II rapids. Downstream, the rapids get decidedly more rowdy, climaxing with the quarter-mile long Snaggletooth rapid-a steep, boulder-strewn cascade rated at Class IV.
This trip runs through two stunning canyons: Dolores Canyon and Slickrock Canyon. Dolores Canyon has the greater number of large rapids, and is an alpine area, with many beautiful pine trees, some growing as tall as the canyon walls. There are side hikes to ancient granaries, and many beautiful side canyons to explore.
Slickrock Canyon does not have as many rapids but makes up for it in its sheer beauty. This is the deepest canyon on the Dolores River and is classified a "Wild and Scenic" area. The sandstone canyon walls rise an immense 1,200 feet above the river. Side hikes to Native American rock art sites and fossilized dinosaur prints are second only to the geological formations revealed in the canyon layers.
A place to rejuvenate your mind and spirit? Leave civilization behind and join us on the river. Your body naturally slows down to a peaceful rhythm, moving with the flow of the water.
