Whitewater kayak lessons and instruction based out of their native wood lodge in the remote world famous Futaleufu river valley in Patagonia, Chile. Their Patagonia South Kayak School was founded by Olympic paddler and internationally acclaimed kayak instructor, Chris Spelius. Whether you want to learn to roll a kayak, or sharpen your paddling skills you will receive world-class instruction from their experienced team of instructors in a setting that is beyond your imagination.
The Intro to Big Water week serves as Expediciones Chile's "Gateway to the Futaleufu" and to the guided trips offered at their Campo Tres Monjas kayak camp. The instructors will take you step-by-step through the Ten rules of Big Water Paddling. You will come home with incredible experiences and skills. The emphasis on this week will be on: river reading skills, eddy hopping, rolling on both sides, boat scouting, boat piloting, boat momentum, and lateral moves - all designed to make river running precise and as effortless as possible. Here you will learn to safely harness the power of the river, and work with it, to put your kayak where it needs to be.
There will be no "adrenalin rush kayaking" here or uneasy nights of sleep before the next day`s river section. Expediciones Chile has designed this week so that kayakers will get to see many of the world famous Class V rapids of the Futaleufu but at the same time not have to paddle them. This week is meant for the solid Class III/III+ boater who wants an introduction to true big water kayaking. It is one of their instructor's most favorite itineraries.
Expediciones Chile invites you to come explore what they call "the best kept secret of Patagonia," a magical place where hundreds of glacial lakes are connected by thousands of kilometers of pristine rivers, all flowing through the dramatic Andean Mountain range. Be enchanted by its natural rhythms, where condors soar in southern thermals high above turquoise rapids thundering through rarely explored granite canyons. Futaleufu means "great great river" in Chile's native Mapuche language and its power has made it one of the most coveted whitewater kayaking destinations in the world.
