The protected hardwood creek in Yulee, Florida allows for a relaxing paddle through the canopied blackwaters. Shaded and shielded from the winds, the creek cuts through the forest and wanders back in time. See alligators sunning on the banks and Cypress knees rising out of the tea colored waters. Paddle at your own pace through towering maple and cypress trees. See if you can paddle far enough to reach "the Cypress Tree," soaring over 150 feet into the sky and worth the paddle itself. The creek is located thirty minutes from the shop and is a short drive from Amelia Island. Typically we enjoy two hours of paddling on this easy year-round trip.

Roses Bluff - Georgia Adventure Matrix
Roses Bluff - Georgia

Duration: 3 hours

As the St. Marys River in Georgia approaches the mouth, it broadens out into a vast marsh estuary. Smaller rivers and creeks branch off the main river, stretching the open spaces of soft green spartina grass waving gently, the fields dissected by arteries of waterways randomly flowing through. These waterways include numerous unnamed paths that may or may not lead somewhere, and one back route river once used by eighteenth century smugglers to avoid the watchful eye of authorities. This river, the Bells River, passes by the areas largest bluffs towering over the rivers' shoreline. Paddle under these bluffs listening to the forest songbirds while Herons and Egrets glide over the marsh on your other side. The Roses Bluff guided kayak tour loops from St. Marys waterfront over the river and through a narrow cut to the Bells River. From there, we follow the river flow to the bluffs, gliding and observing as the tide sweeps us past. Then we continue up the river until it empties back into the St. Marys River and takes us back to the starting point.

Traversing this watery border between Florida and Georgia provides the perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Only light strokes are needed to traverse these black tannic waters as we run with the current flowing from the Okefenokee Swamp to the sea. There's plenty of time for quiet observation, chances to hone paddling skills, glean River knowledge from one of our Guides, or explore mysterious cut-offs. Lunchtime signifies a stop along one of the River's numerous sandbars and moments to sun on a sugar sand beach, take a refreshing swim, or contemplate the River's rich colors - gold, red, black - as it gently laps at your feet. The evolving River assures that this trip is never exactly the same. Recent storm waters may cover the many sandbars while dryer weather exposes them, creating varying shorelines from sandy ridges to walls of river birch, oak, palmetto. Cedar knees peek out of dark waters. Wildlife play hide and seek overhead - blue heron, osprey, and a myriad of songbirds. And while rustic fish camps belie the feeling of charting unexplored territory, a stray deer, raccoon or other forest animal confirm you're definitely off the beaten path.
