Take a trip to The NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute in tribal Rotorua. Visit a Maori weaving house, a Kiwi bird farm and the Pohutu Geyser that spurts hot water up to 30 metres into the air. Don't miss the Mai Ora - a quintessentially Maori programme presented by the locals. Showcasing the culture of the Maoris, the Mai Ora is performed at the marae (a communal meeting place), and opens with the sound of a war trumpet, which warns the host tribe of approaching people. Then comes the te powhiri ceremony, where hosts and visitors call out greetings to each other to express their peaceful intentions.
