Great for guests and families interested in moderate hiking and a complete Canyon experience, this classic 4 day / 3 night hiking tour descends the South Kaibab Trail to Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch, then ascends the Bright Angel Trail. You will eat gourmet meals prepared by your professional guide as you enjoy sunsets from the shores of the Colorado River.
Your descent down the South Kaibab trail is significant, in that this trail was was used by copper miners in the late nineteenth century and was also used by horse thieves to move their loot across the canyon. It is also one of the best trails in the canyon for panoramic views, which you will enjoy all the way down. You will spend two nights at Bright Angel Campground, an easy walk from the famous and historic Phantom Ranch. One day will be set aside for day hiking and exploring Phantom Ranch and the relatively lush bottom of the canyon, where the Colorado River has been slicing its way through rock for millions of years.
After a day enjoying Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River, we will move camp to Indian Gardens, an equally breathtaking spot. Indian Gardens is a natural spring that watered garden plots for centuries. The fourth day will see us hiking out the Bright Angel Trail back to the South Rim, enjoying more spectacular views along the way.
We supply all gear (exept personal clothing and hiking boots), a premier Canyon guide who will prepare gourmet meals along the way, and, most importantly, an opportunity to enjoy the bottom of the Canyon safely and comfortably.
Itinerary
Day 1
Our hike begins on the South Kaibab Trail, a deservedly popular route that offers spectacular views both up and down the Canyon. It’s seven miles of well-maintained trail to the Bright Angel Campground, our destination and camp for the first two nights.
Day 2
This is a great basecamp for a layover day and a chance to relax and absorb the magic of the Canyon. Remember your swimsuit for a soak in the cool waters of Bright Angel Creek, spend quality time with your family exploring the area, or join your guide for hikes along the river – the choice is yours.
Day 3
After a hearty breakfast we’ll pack up and make an early departure to take advantage of the cool hiking hours of the morning. From the Colorado River, we’ll follow Garden Creek upstream to Indian Garden – a spring site that watered seasonal Havasupai garden plots for centuries.
Day 4
A casual morning and delicious breakfast will precede a beautiful hike out as we continue our ascent to the rim via Garden Creek and the Bright Angel Trail. It’s 4 ½ miles from camp to the parking lot and a beautiful drive back to civilization for an anxiously anticipated shower, dinner, and bed.
