For a quick introduction to get you started with Cross-Country Skiing, we offer a 75-minute lesson which covers the basics of the classic diagonal stride, turning, and negotiating small hills. Our instructors will present a series of drills designed to gradually improve your skills at a manageable pace. Perfect for those with no skiing experience or no formal instruction.
Includes trail pass valid for the entire day. If you opt to rent skis, the rental is also valid for the day.
Itinerary
First 15 Minutes: Welcome & Introduction
To get you started, we’ll introduce you to moving around with skis on your feet. We introduce you to the equipment, attaching and removing your skis, and basic stretching.
Next 30 Minutes: Flat Terrain
The bulk of the class takes place on our flat teaching tracks, where you’ll learn the classical skiing motion, the “Diagonal Stride.”
Final 30 Minutes: Beginning Hills
We want you to be able to ski a variety of terrain, so we spend the final portion of the lesson on a small hill, learning to ski up and down while maintaining control. Your instructor will present you with challenges appropriate for your abilities so you can build your skills. At the end of the lesson, we’ll get you started with a short tour of the area.
Gear List
Skis & Rentals
Any set of cross-country skis and boots will work, though recent technology has produced skis that are far more user-friendly than older models. If you do not own skis, or if you would like to try the latest skiing equipment, rentals of skis, boots, and poles are available. Simply choose the “Ski Rental” add-on during the reservation process. Rentals and trail passes are good for the entire day.
What to Wear
Cross-country ski clothes should offer protection from the cold, wind, and snow (even if it’s not snowing, you are likely to fall a time or two). The challenge in cross-country skiing is to stay warm without over-dressing.
- Base & Insulating Layers: Wear several thin layers of wool or synthetic clothing (fleece, running tops and/or tights, polypro outdoor apparel, etc.) that can be easily added or removed.
- Top Layer: Wind- and water-resistant jackets and pants are highly recommended.
- Hat and Gloves are required.
- On Your Feet: Wool/Smartwool socks are best.
- Avoid cotton clothing (jeans, most T-shirts) as it will not keep you dry or warm.
- Don’t overdress – sweating doesn’t help you stay warm.
Weather & Snowmaking
Because our teaching area is covered with machine made snow, we are capable of holding classes in almost any weather. Rarely are classes cancelled due to a lack of snow or inclement weather. Please call the Ski Track if you have any question as to whether classes will be held. No refunds will be granted for missed classes.
Weston Ski Track reserves the right to cancel classes and trips due to unsafe weather conditions and will make final decisions two hours before the start time of the event. Weston Ski Track additionally reserves the right to cancel classes and trips due to low enrollment.
Check-In
Please check in at the front desk before your class. If you will be renting ski equipment we ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes before the class is scheduled to begin.
Releases for Rentals
All participants who rent equipment (or a parent/guardian, if the participant is under 18) will be required to sign a waiver and release of liability before renting equipment. Please read it over and give us a call or e-mail if you have any questions. A copy of the release can be viewed on our web page. There is no need to sign the release in advance of your class.
