A true sea kayaking adventure! Paddle from the mainland over to Cumberland Island National Seashore, passing by bluffs then cutting through fields of salt marsh. Land on the island next to Plum Orchard mansion, a reminder of opulent days past. Then walk across a true forest wonderland to miles of empty and undisturbed beaches, where you'll relax on the beach and enjoy lunch.

This action packed day will give provide the participant with a sense of accomplishment granted to those who strive for the unusual. It is a true gem of the kayaking world.

Itinerary

Day 1

Check-In & Orientation Meet your guides at the shop and get checked-in. Up the Creek Xpeditions will shuttle you to Crooked River State Park, approximately 10 minutes. Once at the destination, your guide will provide a paddling orientation, then assist launching your kayak into the water. Paddling Paddle through beautiful and lively salt marshes to Plum Orchard on Cumberland Island. Mansion Tour & Nature Hike Take a tour of a turn of the century Carnegie mansion (currently unavailable due to renovations). Then hike across Cumberland Island to a desolate, wilderness beach, approximately 1 hour. Rest & Lunch When you reach the beach you can rest upon the broad white sand, take a leisurely stroll or swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Lunch will be provided for you. Hiking You and your guide will retrace you hike back across Cumberland Island ending at the marsh, approximately 1 hour. Paddling & Finish Paddle back to Crooked River State Park, again paddling with the flow of the tide. Upon returning, the guide will load the kayaks and shuttle you back to the shop.

Is This Trip For You?

This trip does not require previous paddling experience, however, it is physically challenging due to the various activities and length of the trip. The paddle portion is suited for beginner thru advanced levels. There is little wind protection, making this trip more challenging on windy days. The waters are tidally influenced which helps you paddle in both directions. Sea kayaks are used on this trip.


Food

Lunch is included on this trip. A typical lunch will include Lunch meat sandwhich, chips, fresh fruit, granola bar, and cookie. Water will also be provided. We can accommodate special requests or dietary restrictions if needed. (No Alcohol is served on day trips.)


Money

You will need to arrange all pre and post lodging and meals for your trip. Gratuities are not included in the price of the adventure. Money is not required during the trip. Do not bring valuables. Guides will carry a waterproof bag for your convenience. A small amount of money may be useful for souvenirs or snacks at the end of journey back in the. ATM or bank access will not be available during the trip.


Destination Location

Cumberland Island is Georgia's largest and southernmost barrier island. The island has three major ecosystem regions. Along the western edge of the island there are large areas of saltwater marshes. One will also see gnarled live oak trees covered with Spanish moss and the palmetto plants at the edge of Cumberland's dense maritime forest. Cumberland Island's most famous ecosystem is its beach, which stretches over 17 miles. On this trip we will also pass by the Plum Orchard Mansion which was built in 1898 for George Carnegie & Margaret Thaw.


Travel Companions

Up the Creek Xpeditions can lead custom group trips in excess of 40 people. If you would like to consider such a trip, please contact us. The regular scheduled trips are much more intimate. Our philosophy is we do not cancel trips if someone has signed up, meaning that you could have you own private guided trip.


Transportation

Transportation to and from the paddling site will be provided by Up the Creek Xpeditions. . Customers who wish to meet us at the site are welcome to do so with prior confirmation.
