This course is for those who want to get into the exciting yet relaxing sport of sea kayaking (also known as touring). All specialty equipment is provided (sea kayak, paddle, spray skirt, PFD, paddle jacket).  All you need to bring is the same personal equipment as you would wear to the beach:  sunscreen, sunglasses, something to get wet in (swimsuit), wetsuit booties or river sandals (Chacos, Tevas, etc.), a hat, a bottle of water, and a snack.

Meet at the gravel pond at Chatfield State Park.  Enter through the main entrance to the park off of Wadsworth Blvd (entry fee is $6 per vehicle). 

Itinerary

Day 1

<P>The class is broken down into three sections:</P> <OL> <LI>Components of a sea kayak and their uses.&nbsp; Dry land (45 minutes) <LI>Balancing in your kayak, paddle strokes, turning with and without a rudder.&nbsp; On the lake (1.5 hour) <LI>Self-rescue demonstration and practice.&nbsp; On the lake (45 minutes)</LI></OL>

Gear List

<P>All you need to bring is the same personal equipment as you would wear to the beach:&nbsp; </P> <UL> <LI>sunscreen <LI>sunglasses with retention straps (Croakies, etc.) <LI>something to get wet in (swimsuit) <LI>wetsuit booties or river sandals (Chacos, Tevas, etc.) <LI>a hat <LI>a bottle of water <LI>a snack</LI></UL> <P>Wetsuits and booties are available to rent for an extra $10.&nbsp; We highly recommend these during the months of May and June, as the water is still a bit cold.</P>

Destination Location

<P>Meet at the gravel pond at Chatfield State Park.&nbsp; Enter through the main entrance to the park off of Wadsworth Blvd (entry fee is $6 per vehicle).&nbsp; </P> <P>Go right at the T-intersection.&nbsp; Follow the road south for about 1 mile.&nbsp; The road will turn to the left, and on the right you will see a body of water.&nbsp; This is the gravel pond.&nbsp; Take&nbsp;a right on the first dirt road and go 200 yards to the parking lot at the end.&nbsp; This is where you will be met by your instructor.</P>
