This ultimate multi sport combines our 6 day backpacking trip into the heart of Glacier National Park with our 2 day rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. The trip includes a motel stay to freshen up between the backpacking and the rafting (dinner and breakfast are a la carte that night). Mileage will vary from 4 to 12 miles a day. A usual day of elevation will be about 500 to 800 feet elevation gain, while a more strenuous day will be a gain of 2000 to 3000 feet, and you'll be carrying about 40 pounds. You'll spend the days in sub-alpine and alpine meadows amongst Glacier's towering peaks. On the trail, your guide will point out features of interest, identify flora and fauna and be on the lookout for wildlife. You'll be camping in Glacier's beautiful, remote backcountry campgrounds. Our guides are great backcountry cooks so you'll enjoy delicious meals and be able to relax after a challenging day of hiking. We will take a scenic boat cruise down <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Waterton</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Lake</st1:PlaceType> back into the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">United States</st1:place></st1:country-region> to the Goat Haunt Ranger Station where we will begin our hike. Our first nights camp on the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">shore</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Lake</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> Francis offers great fishing for rainbow trout in a spectacular setting with a snow fed waterfall at the head of the lake. After setting up camp we'll have one of GWG's delicious backcountry meals.<o:p></o:p></DIV>

Day 2

After a leisurely breakfast, we'll break camp and head up the trail to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Brown</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Pass</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> and the Continental Divide gaining about 1,200 feet in elevation. Here you'll find some of Glacier's alpine splendor, a beautiful meadow filled with endless colors of wildflowers and some of those tasty huckleberries. If time permits we can take a side trek up to see Thunderbird Glacier and it's ice caves. Then just up around the corner from Brown Pass is a high mountain cirque called Hole In The Wall that was carved by glacial activity thousands of years ago. We'll camp in this lush alpine basin filled with several waterfalls (one of which makes a great alpine shower, brrrrr...). The incredible view from here looks down on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Bowman</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Lake</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> and across to Weasel Collar Glacier.

Day 3

If the huckleberry picking was successful at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Brown</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Pass</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>, then maybe we'll have huckleberry pancakes for breakfast, a backcountry delight. Then up we go over <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Boulder</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Peak</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. It's only about an hour's walk to the top and this is what they mean by sitting on top of the world. What a view! Back at camp the mountain goats have checked to see who's come to visit.

Day 4-6

Leaving the high country, we'll drop 3,000 feet in elevation down into the secluded <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Kintla</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Valley</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. The next two nights will be spent camping along the shores of Upper Kintla and <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Kintla</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Lakes</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> with great opportunities for fishing and swimming. We'll wind up at the foot of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Kintla</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Lake</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> to meet our shuttle back to West Glacier. To top off the trip we'll have a stop at the remote town of <st1:City w:st="on">Polebridge</st1:City> and try to figure out how they keep the ice cream frozen since the power company hasn't made it up the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">North Fork</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Valley</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> yet. We'll arrive in West Glacier and drop you off at the Glacier Highland Motel around 5 PM.

Day 7-8

Enjoy the next 2 days floating and camping along the banks of the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on">Flathead River</st1:place>. This river forms the boundary between <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Glacier</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">National Park</st1:PlaceType> and the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Flathead</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">National Forest</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. Flora and fauna abound on its banks making this one of the most scenic areas in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region>. While floating the river you may dangle your feet in the cool mountain waters and challenge the most exciting white water around. Your guide will distribute between 5-8 pounds of food per guest. After packing is complete, your backpack will weigh about 35-40 pounds.<o:p></o:p> <o:p></o:p> Your guide will prepare and serve all the meals. All cooking utensils and cooking gear will be provided. You will receive a lightweight coffee mug, which you are welcome to keep. Your guide will carry a first aid kit, water filter, bear spray, toilet paper, trowel, and hand sanitizer. Each backcountry campground has a pit toilet, tent sites, a food prep and eating area with a food storage device, and a water source. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The trails in Glacier are well maintained, so you will not be hiking on scree fields or hopping over boulders. You will need lightweight, comfortable hiking boots, with good ankle support (we strongly recommend that you break in any new boots prior to the trip). Some of our trips will have stream crossings. By layering clothing you can adjust to the changing temperatures as needed. It is important to stay away from cotton when hiking in Glacier’s temperamental weather. Synthetic shirts, pants, jackets and socks wick away moisture and dry more quickly than cotton. All of these layers combined are a safety measure that will keep you comfortable and guard against hypothermia. We also sell many of these items at our gift and gear store in case you don’t have an outdoor store near you. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Generally one t-shirt to hike in and one for camping is a good idea. One pair of shorts should be fine. You’ll want to bring 1 set of polypro long underwear. Over the long underwear top layer you’ll want the mid-weight fleece shirt, which is basically a non-cotton sweatshirt. Over the long underwear top and bottoms you can wear the waterproof/breathable jacket and pants. For socks, we recommend bringing 2 pairs, one for hiking and one for camp. Wearing sock liners while hiking is highly recommended because they help prevent blisters. We suggest bringing a polar fleece jacket as an extra layer. You are welcome to pick it up the afternoon beforehand if you’d like to pack your stuff in advance. Here is a description of our rental equipment:<o:p></o:p> Backpacks- Kelty internal frame packs. They range in size of 4700 cubic inches to 5600 cubic inches and weigh 5 pounds (when empty).<o:p></o:p> Tents- Sierra Designs. We rent 1-4 person tents. How many people and tent site space will determine what tent you will get (Park Service allows 4 people/2 tents per site). The 2 person tents weigh about 6 pounds, and the 3 person tents weigh closer to 7 pounds. <o:p></o:p> Sleeping Pads- Therma Rest/Crazy Creek. ¾ length and full size available. The Therma rest weighs about a pound, and the Crazy Creek chair weighs 2 pounds. <o:p></o:p> Sleeping bags- Sierra Designs. Synthetic bags that range from 0-40 degrees (Fahrenheit). All equipment (i.e. sleeping bag, pad and tent) is provided. Lifejackets are provided and are mandatory. Wet suits and booties are also provided at no extra cost and may be necessary in late May through late June. July through August, you’ll most likely wear swimsuits or shorts and t-shirts while rafting.<o:p></o:p> You will be camping out at night in a remote and scenic spot along the river. Your guides will set up a kitchen to prepare and serve delicious home cooked meals that they are known for. The guides will provide meals from lunch on Day 1 to lunch on Day 2. All cooking utensils and cooking gear will be provided. They will set up a portable toilet close (but not too close!) to camp, and if necessary, will assist with setting up your tent. <o:p></o:p> The Middle Fork of the <st1:place w:st="on">Flathead River</st1:place> has rapids rated class II and III making it a fun and splashy adventure. An average day’s float is 15 miles of spectacular scenery. By layering clothing you can adjust to the changing temperatures as needed. It is important to stay away from cotton when rafting in Glacier’s temperamental weather. Synthetic shirts, pants, jackets and socks wick away moisture and dry more quickly than cotton. All of these layers combined are a safety measure that will keep you comfortable and guard against hypothermia. We also sell many of these items at our gift and gear store in case you don’t have an outdoor store near you. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Generally one t-shirt to raft in and one to change into is a good idea. Having one change of shorts or long pants after rafting will be fine. You’ll want to bring one set of polypro long underwear. Over the long underwear top layer you’ll want the mid-weight fleece shirt, which is basically a non-cotton sweatshirt. Over the long underwear top and bottoms you can wear the waterproof/breathable jacket and pants. For socks, we recommend bringing one pair for camp. We suggest bringing a polar fleece jacket as an extra layer. Your gear should be divided into items needed during the day and over-night items to be packed on the gear boat. Day items should include warm cloths, rain gear, sun protection, and water bottle. All camping equipment and over-night items will be packed on the gear boat, which will not be accessible during the day. Please pack minimally, and plan to share dry bags. Your guide will carry a first aid kit, dry bag, toilet paper, trowel, and hand sanitizer.<o:p></o:p>
